The Beginning and the End
By
Carlos G. Naval, MD
President, PAO

As we approach the end of the year, we know that a new year is about to begin. Another year of the expected, of the unforeseen, of the exciting, and of the mundane. We don't exactly know what will happen but we do know that it's not going to be the same as this year. Some events will affect us...

Thoughts of Food: NOCHE BUENA

A party isn't a party without food, and a gathering isn't a great one without great food. As we already know food is the center of any Filipino event and the mother of all events on the Filipino calendar is Christmas. Though from a purely religious-Christian perspective, Easter should be the biggest event of all, but probably...

EYE BAGS YEAR 3: Third Time's A Charm
By
Harvey Uy, MD

For the third straight year, the Philippine Academy of Ophthalmology, in cooperation with the Department of Education's Adopt-a-School Program, conducted the Eye Bags Sharing Program, with several new and interesting twists. On August 23, 2011, the PAO Secretariat, representatives from the DEPED, together with Drs. Harvey Uy and Karen Arriola visited 3 public elementary schools (Wawa, Kabukiran and Hacienda) in Abucay, Bataan and distributed 375 school bags with school supplies, 300 loaves of bread and 415 slippers. A set of slippers, bag, school supplies such as chalks, blackboard erasers, scissors, notebooks and ballpens were also given to each teacher of the 3 schools.

Many thanks to our major sponsors of the Eye Bags Sharing Program, namely:

Asia Pacific Eye Center headed by Dr. Antonio Elmer Tan

Fatima Eye Laser Center & Department of Ophthalmology
headed by Dr. Vicente Santos Jr.

Eye Republic Ophthalmology Clinic
headed by Dr. Manolette Roque

AFP Medical Center, Department of Ophthalmology
headed by Dr. Emmanuel Eusebio

  b

Veterans Memorial Medical Center Department of Ophthalmology
headed by Dr. June Mendiola

Gardenia Bakeries Philippines, Inc. c/o Ms. Maryann Cabrera

Zenco Footsteps c/o Ms. Kristine Yao

Other selfless sponsors of the school bags and supplies were:

East Avenue Medical Center, Department of Ophthalmology
Far Eastern University Hospital, Department of Ophthalmology
Jose Rizal Memorial Medical Center, Department of Ophthalmology
Manila Doctors Hospital, Department of Ophthalmology
Dr. Simeon Emmanuel Aquino II
Dr. Rey Emmanuel Barbara
Dr. Pablito Barroga
Dr. Neil Andrew de Lumen
Dr. Cheryll de Jesus
Dr. Michael Go
Dr. Sharah Mae Kaw
Dr. Eulina Lagdao
Dr. Sebastian Isagani Moll
Dr. Airene Malasaga-Oloroso
Dr. Carlos Ong
Dr. Aureo Sanchez
Dr. Medard Sahagun
Dr. Christine Therese Santos
Dr. Charlene Tablante
Drs. Harvey and Pik Sha Uy
Dr. Mabini Vista
Dr. Elaine Marie Yatco

For the first time, the PAO was able to enlist the aid of the Philippine Military (Thanks to Dr. Emmanuel M. Eusebio of AFP Medical Center), which provided an Army Truck to carry the materials to be distributed. Also, for the first time, several sites (instead of just one) became recipients in one year. Lastly, delicious bread was donated by Gardenia Bakeries Philippines Inc.

Despite the rain and a damaged bridge, the Eye Bags team was in good spirits and was warmly welcomed by students and teachers alike. The students greatly appreciated the donations. Almost none of the students had schoolbags and some happily exchanged their old, beat up sandals for new ones. The PAO would like to thank all the generous sponsors. God bless you and the children.
