The Philippine Academy of Ophthalmology (PAO), in cooperation with the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO), held the first Leadership Development Program (LDP) workshop at EDSA Shangri-La Hotel, Mandaluyong City on September 26 and 27, 2013. The PAO-LDP was developed through the initiative of Dr. Sherman O. Valero, who is an alumnus of the APAO-LDP and current Treasurer of PAO. Dr. Valero states that, "While it may be true that great leaders may indeed be born with the potential, developing and nurturing this potential is essential in making it a reality." This 2-day seminar is a means "to identify and develop potential leaders that will someday lead the Academy and its membership". This is in accordance with PAO's mission and vision "to strive to be the premiere and model medical society in the country".

The program was attended by 37 PAO members who were nominated as potential future leaders by their local chapter societies, subspecialty organizations and the executive council of PAO.

The local faculty was composed of distinguished past and current officers of PAO who shared their experiences and learning in leading the academy. These sessions tackled the different aspects of leadership, including current issues, which are unique to the PAO.

The seminar also included international speakers whose lectures and workshops focused on providing the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitude of a credible leader in a professional organization. Dr. Michael Brennan, past president of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and prime mover of the AAO-LDP, together with his team from the USA, Dr. Sidney Gicheru, Dr. Linda Tsai and Ms. Gail Schmidt gave their experiences with the AAO leadership and AAO-LDP. Ms. Marsheila Devan, a communication specialist, also from the USA, shared tips on effective conversation skills. Dr. Catherine Green from Australia, gave a lecture on cultures and organizations: working together in a region of diversity. This was to give the participants a broader, more international perspective relating to leadership, particularly in the Asia Pacific region. Lastly, a fun and interactive management workshop to improve administrative skills of the participants was led by Ms. Kymm Choo, an international management expert from Singapore.

The PAO-LDP coincided with the APAO midterm LDP that was held in the same venue immediately after this workshop. The APAO-LDP was attended by potential future leaders from Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam.

A fellowship dinner was hosted by PAO on September 27, 2013. This allowed the candidates to interact and form networks with other future leaders of the Asia-Pacific Region.
